Each August, the COA Patient Advocacy Network (CPAN) helps patient advocates across the country bring state and federal policymakers to their practices to experience community oncology firsthand. On Wednesday, June 12, at 12 p.m. ET, host Rose Gerber, MS, and guest Chelsea Klock, RN, OCN, discussed the Sit in My Chair program and how you can show your representatives why community oncology matters. The Sit in My Chair program puts policymakers into the patient’s seat, taking them through the routine of a patient receiving treatment. Each representative gets to hear from patients and providers about the experience of treatment, why community oncology is the preferred setting for cancer treatment, and how treatment can be impeded by pharmacy benefit managers, insurers, and other middlemen. Creating this connection with your lawmakers is key to ensuring community oncology remains convenient, cutting-edge, and affordable for those in need. As the CPAN Chapter Advocacy Leader at Hematology-Oncology Associates of Central New York, Chelsea Klock has led the efforts in hosting a Sit in My Chair event. She walked viewers through the details of inviting an elected official, what visits are like, and how to maintain a working relationship with those officials. This event was part of our virtual CPAN Advocacy Chats series - short, monthly educational webinars on key cancer issues and the policies that impact them. Each month features a new topic and special guests joining us. Patients, survivors, caregivers, and other cancer care advocates are all invited to join us for these free, interactive, virtual events!
