At Textkernel a skill is more than a word, it’s a trait or capacity that can be associated with an individual across various professional scenarios.
Textkernel’s skills classification is vast with more than 12,000 skill concepts that categorize over 300,000 synonyms across over 25 languages.
Collecting all the concepts and synonyms in our taxonomies is an ongoing process that evolves to reflect changes in the market. It involves looking at job postings, existing taxonomies, online sources and websites, educational institutions’ descriptions, and syllabuses.
We also used statistical techniques and machine learning to distill our vast list into something relevant and useful. And it doesn’t stop there: we assess relevancy by analyzing real-world usage of skill concepts across millions of job postings and candidate CVs to ensure they’re spot on. Finally, our dedicated quality assurance teams extensively inspect and improve the system to guarantee that the skill list reflects human intuition.
We distinguish between 4 categories of skills: professional skills, soft skills, IT skills, and languages. There’s also a similarity score between each pair of skills which adds structure.
