Red: IPC Phase 4 (Emergency): Households either have large food consumption gaps that are reflected in very high acute malnutrition and excess mortality; or are able to mitigate large food consumption gaps but only by employing emergency livelihood strategies and asset liquidation. Maroon: IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe/ #Famine): Households have an extreme lack of food and/or other basic needs even after full employment of coping strategies. Powerful Wrap-Up of Today’s Side Event: Cultivating Change for Land Degradation Neutrality Through Evidence-Based Policy and Practice Today, on December 6th, at COP16Riyadh, we had an exceptional side event on Cultivating Change for Land Degradation Neutrality Through Evidence-Based Policy and Practice. Moderated by Christine Magaju, this event brought together a diverse group of experts who shared invaluable insights and strategies to combat land degradation and promote sustainable land management. Key Highlights and Takeaways: Rebbie Harawa Robbie highlighted the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with scientific research to create sustainable land management practices. He stressed the role of community involvement in ensuring the success of restoration projects. Sara Omi Sara shared her experiences from indigenous communities, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage in land restoration. She advocated for policies that protect indigenous rights and integrate their knowledge into land management strategies. Lokesh Goud Dabbi Lokesh focused on the role of technology in monitoring and managing soil health. He highlighted innovative tools and techniques that can provide accurate data to guide restoration efforts and policy decisions. Martina Fleckenstein Martina discussed the significance of cross-sector collaboration in achieving LDN. She emphasized the need for integrated approaches that consider environmental, social, and economic factors in policy-making. Chaney St. Martin Chaney highlighted the role of international cooperation in addressing land degradation. It highlights that the agricultural sector, which consumes 85% of the country's water, is severely affected by inefficiencies, droughts, and conflicts, leading to the displacement of thousands, particularly in southern regions. Many of these displaced individuals are relocating to urban slums, where inadequate government support and increasing poverty worsen their situation. Climate Change Climate change is a pressing global issue, and Yemen is no exception. The country faces significant challenges due to climate change, including water scarcity, extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and floods. One critical aspect often overlooked is waste management and its impact on the environment and public health. In Yemen, improper waste disposal exacerbates the effects of climate change. The accumulation of waste not only pollutes the land and water but also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing waste management is essential for mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable development. Efforts to improve waste management in Yemen include initiatives to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. These initiatives aim to minimize the environmental impact of waste and promote a circular economy. By implementing effective waste management practices, Yemen can reduce its carbon footprint and improve public health. A circular economy focuses on minimizing waste and making the most of resources. By recycling materials and reusing products, we can reduce the need for raw materials and decrease environmental impact. This approach not only benefits the environment but also creates economic opportunities and fosters innovation. The Yemeni Response Council (YRC) has been actively involved in promoting sustainable waste management practices. Their efforts focus on empowering local communities, providing essential training, and fostering sustainable development. Through these initiatives, YRC aims to mitigate the impact of climate change and support environmental conservation. Supporting such projects is vital for building a culture of sustainability and civic engagement. Decarbonisation: what's it all about ⁉ Muwaffaq AlKhedery joined our latest Climate Coffee Club to tell us what he has learnt from being a COP negotiator and senior climate change advisor. Here's what we learned: ✅ Energy production of all types accounts for 72 percent of all emissions. If we can crack the energy problem, we significantly improve our decarbonisation efforts. ✅ Decarbonisation will ultimately bring about more economic growth and job creation. But we need to figure out how to get the existing and emerging workforce into the right jobs. ✅ Global decarbonisation efforts are inherently political (much more than I thought!) and not everyone agrees on the mechanism through which it is achieved. Countries must be careful not to become a floating body, going out on their own without the support of their 'pack'. ✅ Climate change is a numbers game. In order for it to be successful, we all must move together. ✅ More stringent climate legislation is coming to the GCC. Carbon trading mechanisms are expected in the next 2-3 years. Companies need to act fast to anticipate change or risk feeling like a school student who hasn't started their dissertation due next month. ✅ Every company can do something. You should start by developing your baseline. There is no value in putting all of your money into something that makes very little difference to your ESG goals. ✅ It is very rare for companies to meet net zero without offsetting. If a company says it is net zero, it is likely just measuring scope 1. ✅ The challenge with CCUS is the S (storage!) It is better and safer to store greenhouse gases as solids, but doing so comes with many practical challenges. Here are 4 incredible examples leading the way: FabricAID – a social enterprise working to provide affordable clothing to vulnerable communities while reducing waste.
