Teach Your Child How to Read to Learn
Throughout the school years, your child will be required to read and remember information from textbooks and other nonfiction sources. You can help by sharing tips about how to tackle this kind of reading.
Here are some steps for your child to follow:
- Preview the text. Your child should read the main headings and look at the pictures.
- Read the introduction and the summary before reading the body of the text.
- Read any questions that follow the passage first.
- Read a short section of the main text. Your child should make sure to understand it before moving on.
- Note words in boldface type. These are often key terms. Your child should write the word on one side of an index card and the definition on the back. Later, these cards will come in handy for review.
- Turn section headings into questions. For example, if the section heading is "The Water Cycle," your child could ask, "What are the steps in the Water Cycle?" and then answer the question.
