The weather outside is frightful, but the city of Toronto has events this weekend that are so delightful!
With the month of December just days away, here’s what to expect for weather and attractions this weekend.
Weather
Winter is in full swing this weekend with temperatures finally dropping into the negatives with expected flurries.
Between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the high this weekend will be 4 C and the low a chilly -2 C. On Friday and Saturday, Environment Canada says there is a 40 per cent chance for flurries and a 60 per cent chance on Sunday.
This weekend also might be your last chance to soak up that last bit of sunlight before those grey clouds are here to stay. Saturday’s weather will be a mix of clouds and sun, so make sure you head outside to enjoy it while you still can.
TTC
You may want to plan your travel if you are taking transit this weekend.
There will be no subway service between St Clair West and King stations over the weekend due to planned track work. Regular service will continue on Monday by 6 a.m., shuttle buses will operate in the meantime. Beginning on Dec. 2, shuttle busses will end at 11 p.m. with early night closures in affect.
505 Dundas streetcar detours will continue this weekend, the streetcar’s updated route using Gerrard and Parliament Streets to divert in both directions. Replacement buses will travel along Dundas Street so riders are still able to access the usual route during infrastructure work. Busses will operate as normal from Broadview Station before creating a loop by turning north on Jarvis Street, east on Gerrard Street, and south on Sherbourne Street, before returning to the usual eastbound route. For more information on where to switch between buses and streetcars, riders can check the TTC website.
What’s Going On
The Cavalcade of Lights has its opening for the season on Saturday. In previous years, the cavalcade has featured live music, skating, light displays and ice rink performances. Head down to Nathan Phillips Square between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. to catch the winter solstice-inspired celebrations, but come before 6:40 p.m. if you want to see the tree-lighting ceremony.
This weekend Torontonians can visit the city’s newest holiday market at the Harbourfront Centre. Winterfest Toronto, running every weekend from Nov. 29 until Jan. 5, will feature a variety of food and drink vendors, a Scandinavian-inspired outdoor bar, a “Winter Express” train ride, a s’mores warming zone and much more.
The festival will also have an urban tree lot where residents can purchase a tree for the holidays.
The last weekend in November also marks the end to a few events that people have enjoyed over the last few weeks.
Thursday is last chance to attend the 2024 European Union Film Festival. The festival features 28 films from 28 countries, intended to take viewers on a cinematic experience across Europe. The final show is at 6 p.m. at the Alliance Française — The Spadina Theatre on 24 Spadina Road.
The last Swifties Scavenger Hunt is Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. For a few hours, the Royal Ontario Museum will be home to an interactive game inspired by Swift’s lyrics. The scavenger hunt began on Nov. 9, parallel to Taylor Swift’s visit to Toronto this month.
If you’re a fan of artisan creations or looking for a unique holiday gift, the days are numbered on this year’s One Of A Kind Winter Show. The Enercare Centre at the Exhibition Place will feature thousands of handmade artisan artwork made by designers all-over Canada everyday at 10 a.m. wrapping up on Sunday.
