Teach Your Child to Think Things Through
There are many ways you can help your child learn to ask good questions and think through problems. Here are some tips:
- Ask thinking questions. Say things like, "I wonder why that happened." Encourage your child to ask the same kinds of questions, and look for answers together.
- Encourage your child to find facts to back up opinions. If your student feels strongly about a school or community issue, suggest writing a letter to a school administrator, a news outlet or a local official.
- Ask questions about schoolwork. After your child reads a chapter from a book, ask "What do you think is the most important thing you read?"
- Talk about the questions your child's teachers are asking, not just what they are teaching. In social studies, the teacher might have asked, "Why did people come to live in the Americas?"
- Think out loud. We don't always let our children know how we solve problems. The next time you face a decision, share your thoughts. Talk about each step. Your child will see what it takes to think a problem through.
