US Coast Guard's final rule on cybersecurity: What maritime operators need to know

US-flag vessels and marine facilities must follow new Coast Guard cybersecurity rules, including appointing a cybersecurity officer, creating security plans, and conducting regular training, with full compliance due by July 16, 2027.

US Coast Guard's final rule on cybersecurity: What maritime operators need to know

On July 16, 2025, the US Coast Guard's final rule on cybersecurity in the US marine transportation system will become effective for US-flag vessels and marine facilities that are regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA), including facilities located on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The rule provides a phased schedule for its implementation for the owners and operators of such vessels and facilities.
