The goal of all discipline should be to teach children, not to punish them, most experts agree. Think about your family's discipline policies. What do they teach your child?

The late Dr. Lee Salk, a noted pediatrician and family dynamics researcher, suggested that discipline should be "an element in showing love for a child."
